Senior apartment complex and hotel proposed near Carlson Towers in Minnetonka
A proposal has been submitted by Developer United Properties to build a 186-unit senior apartment complex and hotel near the Carlson Towers in Minnetonka.
This proposal is for a six-story apartment development for residents who are 55 and older. The lot chosen is currently a grassy area west of the Carlson Towers on Carlson Parkway near Interstate 394. Preliminary project plans, according to documents submitted to the city, show the project name as The Pointe.
The Pointe project has plans to begin construction of the apartments in 2020 with completion in 2022. The second stage of the project would consist of a hotel with up to 140 rooms. A lawn area with amenities would separate the two buildings. The Minnetonka Planning Commission planned to discuss the concept plan at its December 5th meeting.
Though not a part of The Pointe’s design, building apartments for seniors is part of a larger shift to redesign continuing care retirement facilities that appeal to the next generation. Boomers are demanding an alternative to current senior housing, especially when it comes to amenity spaces. A growing trend in housing for senior citizens is a tiered approach to the aging process, which includes part independent living, part assisted living, and part skilled nursing facility. This would give older adults the option to live in the same community for the duration of their lives, with much of their future care determined.
